The more I am watching TV the more I feel responsible for my child. It is scientifically proven that media affects our kid’s physical health. It causes eating disorders, attention deficit, addictive behavior and obesity. An anorexic fashion models distort a sense of normal body image. A sexual content shows provoke children to start sexual life earlier. Violence in the movies leads to increasing levels of aggression. An addictive behavior like drinking, smoking, drugs and gambling have a direct correlation with onset life.
Marketers consciously advertise products in the entertainment to foster brand awareness with young children so when they grow up, they’ll gravitate to the branded products. We want our kids to have a healthy social life and do well in school. We want them to have good values and behavior. We have to help our children to understand what is right and what is wrong. Parents have to develop responsible and appropriate relationship towards media. We should control the TV time for our children and pick the age-appropriate media. It is important to be aware of Internet and game addiction. This may lead to loss of sleep and social isolation.
We should care about all these things because children are not mature individuals. They learn by exploring the world, parent’s behavior and media. I truly believe that the parents should be a role model for their children and can set a good example by their behavior. I understand that it is not always easy but at least we should try to do our best for the most important people in our life – our children.
