My favorite book for my kids is :Just Go To Bed!” by Mercer Meyer. This book is so funny - The daddy bunny keeps telling the baby bunny to go to bed, but the baby bunny has to be a race car driver, an astronaut, a cowboy and several other characters until he finally makes it to bed. If you have kids, you have been there; the one excuse after another after another…
This is the same guy who wrote the adorable “A Boy and a Frog” picture books, and features the same character as the famous “Just For You”. I think one reason I love this book so much is because it was the first book my daughter ever read herself. Now, listen up, this is one of the best parenting tips I’ve got!
I took long sentence strips (you can get them at the craft store in school supplies) and wrote out each sentence from the book - then made up sentences using the same words. I did this because she had learned the book by heart in order, so I mixed up the sentences to see if she could recognize the words without the pictures to help. It took a few days, but she did it! She was only four.
Now my daughter is nine, and she is just like me. She always has a book in her hand, and would rather read than watch TV. I am so glad she likes to read - I have a lot of friends that all say their kids hate reading. I think that is so sad! When I was growing up, we didn’t have TV in our house, so I learned to read when I was three and I couldn’t even tell you how many tens of thousands of books I have read in my life!
Read to your kid today! You’ll be glad you did - and go get a copy of “Just Go To Bed” and “Just For You”!!
We all know how important reading for children is! Today the variety of books is huge, but like everything else the price has gone way up! I can’t afford every book my daughter wants, so I’m glad we live in a town that has a terrific library and plenty of children resources. When my daughter reads a book at school that she likes, we can find the rest of the series at the library.
There are lots of tools available for learning. School projects are a snap when we can just go to the library and get a stack of books about whatever subject we need. They also have online access, so while we are there we can do fact checking and look up more books.
My daughter was just six when she decided to enter the science fair at her school. She wanted to find out what made bananas ripen, so we went to the library to do some research and find out.
The test had three parts - we put a banana in the fridge, one in the windowsill, and one in a paper bag. When the one in the paper bag ripened faster than the one in the window, and WAY faster than the one in the fridge, we were able to discover why from the books we had checked out.
We found out that the ethylene gas was captured around the banana in the bag, and ethylene makes bananas ripen fast! She checked on Ask Jeeves to find an easy way to express it, and finished making her chart and posters. She won first place out of the eight first grade classes in her school, and took third out of all the first grade classes in the district!
Both of my kids love the library, so we have to go at least once a week. It’s one of the few really free things left, and they appreciate getting to read all the books they want - and learn at the same time.
One of my happiest childhood memories is reading. When I was five years old my grandmother used to read to me every afternoon. I still remember that thick book of different fairytales with a dark green cover and a picture of a castle on it. The book was old and had a special sweet smell. The fragrance was do to its location it was usually on the kitchen countertop where my grandmother was cooking different yummy things. I think my love for reading started at this time. I couldn’t stop reading through my middle and high school years. Every book I read was a new great adventure for me. When I was starting the book I couldn’t wait to find out what will happen next. My mother used to hide books from me because I would get so involved in reading that sometimes I forgot to do my homework on time. In our time when computers and the internet are dominating, I still feel that the books are still the foundation of learning. The books are helping children to develop emotionally and socially. It is crucial for every mom and dad to develop a love for books by reading to their child every night. It is important to make it an adventure and fun. We all very busy but even 15 minutes reading a day will make a great difference in your child’s future learning. I like using this websites for choosing the right books and to read reviews TeachersFirst and Barefoot-books
